Some Physiological Parameters as Screening Tools for Drought Tolerance in Bread Wheat Lines (Triticum aestivam L.)

چکیده
Two greenhouse experiments were carried out at the Institute of Biological Production Systems, Leibniz Universität Hannover, Germany during 2008/2009 and 2009/2010 growing seasons to study the influence of the osmotic adjustment (OA) capacity, relative water content (RWC) and specific leaf area (SLA) on tolerance to drought in 22 breeding lines, two parents and tolerant cultivar (Sahel 1) of bread wheat (Triticum aestivam L.) under drought conditions. Differences were seen in of the OA, RWC and SLA of the different genotypes. Mean over all of OA, RWC and SLA for breeding lines were -0.51 Mpa, 83.28% and 116.56 cm2g-1, respectively. Four of the breeding lines showed the greatest osmotic adjustment capacities, high RWC and good SLA values under drought stress conditions better than the tolerant cultivar. The heritability of OA, RWC and SLA was 0.56, 0.49 and 0.88, respectively. The results indicated that osmotic adjustment, as well as RWC and SLA could be used as screening tools for drought resistant bread wheat genotypes in the greenhouse. This study also demonstrated the appropriate greenhouse screening methodology in this regard.

Scarcity of water for irrigation is an alarming issue of Pakistan and the problem is being magnified rapidly with the passage of time. Shortage of water is thus, a limiting factor in increasing per unit area wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) yield that is staple food of most of the people. Eventually, the gap between production and consumption is widening day by day and Pakistan is now suffering fro...

Rapid screening of plant germplasm in the early stages of growth and determining the genetic basis of wheat leaf wilting index at the seedling stage is necessary for wheat breeding programs. In the present research, leaf wilting index for 290 Iranian bread wheat genotypes, including; 90 cultivars and 200 landraces were studied under drought stress conditions at the seedling stage in 2021 in res...

Anther culture-derived haploid embryos were used as explants for Agrobacterium-mediated genetic transformation of bread wheat (Triticum aestivum L. cv CPAN1676) using barley HVA1 gene for drought tolerance. Regenerated plantlets were checked for transgene integration in T₀ generation, and positive transgenic haploid plants were doubled by colchicine treatment. Stable transgenic doubled haploid ...
متن کاملApplicability of Aegilops tauschii drought tolerance traits to breeding of hexaploid wheat
Few genes are available to develop drought-tolerant bread wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) cultivars. One way to enhance bread wheat's genetic diversity would be to take advantage of the diversity of wild species by creating synthetic hexaploid wheat (SW) with the genomic constitution of bread wheat. In this study, we compared the expression of traits encoded at different ploidy levels and evaluate...
متن کاملScreening of Bread Wheat Genotypes for Drought Tolerance Using Phenotypic and Proline Analyses
Drought stress is one of the leading constraints to wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) production globally. Breeding for drought tolerance using novel genetic resources is an important mitigation strategy. This study aimed to determine the level of drought tolerance among diverse bread wheat genotypes using agronomic traits and proline analyses and to establish correlation of proline content and agro...
